Indications
Jardiance is prescribed for:

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: As an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults.

Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: To reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease.
Pharmacology
Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by reducing the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion in urine and thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
Dosage & Administration

Initial Dose: 10 mg once daily, taken in the morning, with or without food.

Maintenance Dose: May be increased to 25 mg once daily if additional glycemic control is needed.

Renal Considerations: Not recommended for patients with eGFR <45 mL/min/1.73 m². For eGFR ≥45 mL/min/1.73 m², dose adjustments are not necessary.

Precautions

Renal Function: Assess renal function before initiating therapy and periodically thereafter.

Volume Depletion: Correct hypovolemia before starting treatment, especially in elderly patients or those on diuretics.

Hypoglycemia Risk: Monitor for signs of hypoglycemia when used in combination with insulin or insulin secretagogues.

Genital and Urinary Infections: Monitor and treat appropriately.

Lactation: Discontinue breastfeeding or the drug, as it is not known whether empagliflozin is excreted in human milk.
