Description

AMANTADINE 100MG CAPS 56’S is a medication used to manage Parkinson’s disease, drug-induced movement disorders, and certain viral infections. Each capsule contains 100 mg of amantadine hydrochloride, a compound that exhibits dopaminergic and antiviral properties.

Indications

• Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders: Amantadine enhances dopaminergic activity in the brain, improving motor control and reducing symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia. It can be used alone or in combination with other anti-Parkinson medications.
• Drug-Induced Extrapyramidal Reactions: It is effective in treating movement disorders induced by antipsychotic drugs.
• Influenza A Prophylaxis & Treatment: Amantadine was once used to prevent and treat influenza A infections. However, due to widespread resistance, its use for this purpose is now limited.

Dosage

• Parkinson’s Disease: The typical starting dose is 100 mg daily for the first week. This may be increased to 100 mg twice daily (200 mg/day) after one week, based on individual response and tolerability. In some cases, the dose may be further increased up to 400 mg/day under medical supervision.
• Drug-Induced Movement Disorders: The usual dose is 100 mg twice daily. Adjustments may be made depending on the patient’s response.
• Influenza A: For treatment, the dose is typically 100 mg once or twice daily. For prevention, the dosage may vary based on the patient’s condition and response.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

• Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly
• Dry mouth
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
• Abnormal dreams
• Headache
• Confusion
• Drowsiness
• Tiredness

Serious side effects may include:

• Extreme drowsiness or sudden sleep episodes
• Shortness of breath
• Swelling in hands or feet
• Painful or difficult urination

Precautions

• Kidney Function: Amantadine is primarily excreted by the kidneys. Dosage adjustments are necessary for individuals with impaired kidney function.
• CNS Effects: Use caution when combining with other central nervous system depressants, including alcohol.
• Allergies: Do not use if allergic to amantadine or any of its components.
• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
