Product Overview:
Lincomycin (Lincozed) 500mg Capsules are a lincosamide antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive organisms. It is particularly useful in patients who are allergic to penicillin or when penicillin therapy is inappropriate.
Mechanism of Action:
Lincomycin works by binding to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and thereby preventing bacterial growth. It is effective against various aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria.
Indications:
Lincomycin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of Gram-positive aerobes such as streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci, or by susceptible anaerobic bacteria. Specific infections include:
- Upper respiratory infections (e.g., tonsillitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis)
- Lower respiratory infections (e.g., pneumonia)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Dental infections
Dosage and Administration:
- Adults: The typical dosage is 500mg every 6 to 8 hours, depending on the severity of the infection.
- Administration: Capsules should be taken with a full glass of water. It is recommended to avoid taking antacids or calcium supplements within 1 to 2 hours before or after taking Lincomycin, as they may interfere with absorption.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to lincomycin or any component of the formulation.
- Use in patients with a history of pseudomembranous colitis associated with antibiotic use.
Precautions:
- Diarrhea: Lincomycin may cause severe diarrhea, including pseudomembranous colitis. If diarrhea occurs, especially if it is watery or bloody, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider immediately.
- Liver and Kidney Function: Use with caution in patients with impaired liver or kidney function. Dosage adjustments may be necessary.
